Tackling Obesity Together

Obesity needs to be a greater health, research and societal priority for EU Member States.

Despite the fact that obesity is estimated to be costing EU countries more than €70 billion a year in healthcare costs and lost productivity, too few Member States have managed to implement comprehensive strategies that cover all aspects of weight management.

Such strategies should include the promotion of healthier lifestyles and the reduction in demand and consumption of excessive amounts of high calorie food and drinks, as well as the treatment of obesity to help prevent the many other diseases on which obesity impacts.

Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers are among a number of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and chronic conditions attributable to excess weight.

The EASO Policy Conference ‘Implementing national obesity policies and action plans in Europe’ raised awareness of different approaches and initiatives that can be taken at national level. The speakers provided examples of best practice, at the same time as sharing ideas and inspiration for policymakers who have found effective strategies difficult to implement.

Presentations included updated obesity statistics, different prevention and treatment strategies from several EU Member States, and policy opportunities such as tackling the obesity epidemic by means of labelling, taxation, and city initiatives.
